Kentucky Hot Brown Sliders

Kentucky Hot Brown Sliders are a twist on a favorite with the addition of veal. The Kentucky Hot Brown Sliders are a favorite for serving at the Kentucky Derby because who doesn’t enjoy a warm bite with buttery bread, melting cheese, bacon, grilled onions and pimentos? This recipe adds perfectly cooked veal cutlets to deliver a great appetizer option. Take your appetizer spread to the next level with this perfect dish!

This awesome recipe comes from the kitchen of our friend Adriana’s Best Recipes. She did a fantastic job on this, as well as on our Benedictine Grilled Veal Crostini’s! Another Kentucky Derby style favorite.

Ingredients

  • 4 veal cutlets, grilled and cut into strips
  • 12 slider bread rolls
  • 1 small, sweet onion
  • 4 small or 1 large, sweet red pepper
  • 2 ½ Tbsp. mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp. coarse French mustard
  • 4 bacon strips, cooked and crispy brown
  • 4 slices gruyere cheese
  • 4 slices of sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tbsp. melted butter
  • 1 Tbsp. everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  1. Prep the veal cutlets first. Pat dry the veal cutlets with a paper towel. Season the cutlets on both sides with coarse black pepper and salt, set aside.
  2. Add cooking oil to a skillet and allow to heat. Grill the cutlets for 1-2 minutes on each side and set them aside. Allow them to rest for 2-3 minutes and cut into strips.
  3. Prep the onions and peppers as well. Slicing the onion and peppers. Grill these along side the cutlets or after the cutlets. Using some cooking oil to keep them from sticking to the grill top.
  4. Grease a rectangular oven safe container or pan and set it aside. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  5. With a long-serrated knife slice the rolls in half. Place the bottoms inside the greased pan or container and set the tops aside.
  6. In a mixing bowl add the mayonnaise and mustard and mix for 1 minute until combined into a creamy mustard spread. Spread on the bread bottoms and to the tops.
  7. Begin building the sliders, first layer the grilled veal and top it with the crispy bacon strips.
  8. Add the grilled mixed onions and sweet peppers making sure to distribute evenly.
  9. Place the gruyere cheese slices on top of the onions and peppers, followed by the cheddar cheese slices.
  10. Cover with the bread tops and brush them with the melted butter. Sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning.
  11. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20-30 minutes at 350 F.
  12. Serve hot, may also pair with potato chips and pickled pepperoncini peppers.
